California Hydrogen Highway Spans 800 MilesBy John Addison (4/23/07) The California Hydrogen Highway Network now extends from Chula Vista, near the Mexican border, to Arcata, near the Oregon border. You are invited to a virtual tour of 800 miles as we visit some of the more interesting stations. Article 20 Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses for 2010 Winter Olympics(4/30/07) British Columbia is providing C$45 million (US$40.6 million) more toward the production of 20 hydrogen fuel cell buses and accompanying fueling stations in Whistler and Victoria. Premier Gordon Campbell made the announcement at the Hydrogen and Fuel Cells 2007 international conference and trade show in Vancouver. A major source for the hydrogen will be 200 kg/hour of waste hydrogen that is now being captured. Green Car Congress FTA Funds $49 Million for New Hydrogen BusesThe Federal Transit Administration (FTA) awarded $49 million in new funding for hydrogen fuel cell buses. The FTA goal is to have hydrogen fuel cell buses represent 10 percent of new U.S. transit bus purchases in the year 2015. These exciting awards include a new generation of fuel cells, hybrid electric propulsion, auxiliary power, and lighter aerodynamic bus designs. Complete Article DOE Funds $100 Million for New Hydrogen ResearchDOE will negotiate these 25 cost-shared projects for an approximate total of $127 million ($100 million DOE cost; $27 million applicant cost) over four years (Fiscal Years 2007 – 2010). These projects seek to overcome cost and durability barriers associated with hydrogen fuel cell research; and will specifically focus on fuel cell membranes, water transport within the stack, advanced cathode catalysts and supports, cell hardware, innovative fuel cell concepts, and effects of impurities on fuel cell performance and durability. Awards also include stationary fuel cell demonstration projects to help foster international and intergovernmental partnerships. DOE Details GM to Build World's Largest Fuel Cell Vehicle FleetGM will build more than 100 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles and will begin placing them with customers in the fall of 2007, as part of a comprehensive deployment plan dubbed "Project Driveway." Designed to gain comprehensive learnings on all aspects of the customer experience, Project Driveway constitutes the first meaningful market test of fuel cell vehicles anywhere. A variety of drivers -- in differing driving environments -- will operate these vehicles and refuel with hydrogen in three geographic areas: California, the New York metropolitan area and Washington D.C. Complete Article One Million Hydrogen Riders: Growth ScenarioCalifornia will have one million daily riders on hydrogen vehicles by 2021 if this Optimistic Scenario becomes a reality. Although this will be less than 3% of the state’s population, it will be a major milestone in achieving energy independency and a reduction in global warming. Most encouraging is that California has a long history of successful innovation that spreads throughout the world.
